The past eight years have seen continued successes for Silk Screen Asian Arts Organization, both in terms of the quality and quantity of our events and our ever-expanding audience.  Silk Screen’s new venture is Silk Sound, an Asian-American jazz-fusion ensemble comprising six internationally acclaimed musicians.

Rehearsals began last summer, and are continuing, with the first public performance during Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto’s inauguration celebration.

The group will have its debut performance on February 28, 2014 at Bellefield Hall, Oakland. Read More »

Celebrating the Chinese New Year of Horse with Silk Screen and Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA (January 24^th , 2013) – Join Silk Screen: Asian Arts and Cultural Organization on Saturday, February 1^st at Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to celebrate and ring in the Chinese New Year 2014 begins – The Year of the Horse!

At this celebration, Silk Screen will present and introduce the Chinese New Year with music performances, a lion dance with parade, and craft activities.

Silk Screen is proud to announce the winner of the RAGS Foundation People’s Choice Award for the 2013 Film Festival. It is Two Weddings and Funeral(South Korea).

The People’s Choice Award is sponsored by the RAGS Foundation, which is a non-profit organization started by Sridhar and Gunjan Tayur.

“One of the specialties of Silk Screen Asian American Film Festival — continuing through May 19 — is showing films from the seldom-seen middle tier of Asian film industries.

Though they labor in the shadows of international film powers like Japan and South Korea, the Philippines, in particular, seems to have developed a vibrant film culture all its own. An excellent example of this, “The Coin Bearer” will be shown on May 16 and 17 at Melwood Screening Room in Oakland.

“The Coin Bearer” is about a family that makes its living from the curious practice of “sakla,” a gambling card game that’s legal only during a wake. It’s a way for families to raise money for the expenses of the deceased, so the authorities (mostly) look the other way. ”
