A dark underworld of cops and criminals lies in the city of Jakarta, although no one recognizes, or wants to admit, the immensity of its vices. Through five short stories, Dilemma boldly explores the depths of Indonesia’s social problems – corruption, radicalism, drugs, sex and gambling – and blurs the lines between good and evil.
This dark drama consists of five short segments, each done by a different director, and each with their own moral predicament. In “Police Officer,” an idealistic police academy graduate feels conflicted between upholding the law and following the common practice of accepting bribes. “Hard Liners” depicts the raise of radical Islam in Indonesia in recent years. It follows the story of Ibnu (Baim Wong), a devout Muslim who gradually starts falling under the influence of the violent and extremist ideas of his friends.
Perhaps the most powerful short is “The Gambler,” which focuses on the underground gambling network largely neglected by Indonesian society. Feeling ignored by his family, a middle-aged father and ex-gambler named Sigit (Slamet Rahardjo), returns to the casino. At the gambling table he must face-off against is nemesis, Gilang (Ray Sahetapy), in order to retain his former glory.
The characters’ interconnected destiny creates and gripping and shocking overall narrative, all accompanied by a powerful and multi-instrumental soundtrack. Each director’s unique vision realistically represents the political, social and legal issues the country faces today.
