"Alternately comic and terrifying, a dazzling act of ... technical excellence, eccentric performances and creative verve" – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon

This remake of the Coen brothers' debut film Blood Simple shifts from 1980s Texas to the ancient Orient. The Coens' dark sensibility may be gone but the noir elements are the same – a suspicious husband hires a crooked lawman to kill his much younger wife and her lover. In the hands of Zhang Yimou(Raise the Red Lantern, Hero, House of Flying Daggers and other masterpieces) – one of the most revered directors of China's "fifth generation" – this interpretation is a droll look at greed and jealousy, with beautiful landscapes. Features a spectacular performance by the villain: a Chinese version of M. Emmet Walsh. With subtitles. (Zhang Yimou; China; 2010; 95 min)
